We seal the existing mounting holes with silicone and hide them behind the rails of your new shower door.
This existing shower door was put in years ago incorrectly by an unnamed local glass company. Note the amount of overlap. The net opening that you enter the enclosure through is substantially smaller than it should be and it would be hard to keep the glass between the overlap clean as well.

The next picture shows a new door with the correct measurements and overlap, what a difference.

It's called the Tub Shield, this is the door that you see at The Tile Shop in Urbandale. It's a panel that is attached to the wall using heavy glass clamps sitting on the top of the tub. The wing attaches to the heavy glass panel with glass to glass hinges and keeps the water spray on the inside of the enclosure. 3/8" clear glass shows off the beautiful tile. This design is becoming very popular.

Go ahead and replace the gold, It's not coming back. We can come to your home and replace the gold trim around your mirrors :) I'ts not messy and takes about one hour per mirror.
